Engadget Logo Engadget Japanese version Android 12 can share WiFi password with "Near by Share"?
Android has the ability to display a QR code and share the password of the Wi-Fi you are connected to, such as when a friend comes to play at home. Although it is a convenient function, it is a little troublesome to have to display the QR code and have the other party read it. But with Android 12, this may be easier.
Abel Tesfaye, a Google engineer, is trying to fix a Wi-Fi sharing page in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to implement a share button with neighbors. As a mechanism, it seems to use Near by Share, also known as AirDrop for Android. You don't have to ask the other person to read the QR code every time, and you can share it with the other person in a remote place such as the other side of the room.
Nearby Share is a standard function if it is Android 6.0 or later, so there is no need to use a QR code scanner etc., and it seems that explanation will be easy.
However, it has not yet been decided that this feature will be adopted. As usual, the Android 12 developer preview may start in February or March. It may not be implemented in the initial release in time, but I would like to expect it to be implemented in the official version of Android 12.
